RICHARDSON, Texas — Taylor Rabalais came to the plate four times on Monday night at Huffhines Field No. 2. He left with every base the game offers.

Hatfish's No. 4, batting leadoff and playing shortstop, hit for the cycle in a 16–8 home win over the DBC Angels. He singled in the first, doubled in the second, hit an inside-the-park home run in the third and tripled in the fourth. He finished 4-for-4 with three runs scored and six RBI.

Six runs came off his bat. Add the two times he scored in the first and second, and he had a hand in eight of them.

How it built

It began quietly. Rabalais singled to open the bottom of the first and came around to score, and Hatfish matched the Angels' one-run first.

Then the second inning nearly ran away from the home side. The Angels put up seven runs in the top half. Hatfish answered with five in the bottom, and Rabalais was in the middle of it: a double, an RBI, and another run scored. After two, the Angels led 8–6.

The third settled the game. Rabalais hit an inside-the-park home run, the only kind of home run this club counts, and it drove in three. Those were Hatfish's only runs of the inning, and they turned an 8–6 deficit into a 9–8 lead. Hatfish never trailed again.

That left the triple, the hardest piece of the four. Rabalais got it in the fourth, a two-run triple in a six-run inning that pushed the lead to 15–8. It was not a natural cycle, which runs single, double, triple, home run in order. The order does not change the count. Four hits, four different bases.

Hatfish added one more run in the fifth. The game ended on time, and Cole's last at-bat was wiped out when the clock expired.

The rest of the card

Rabalais had help. Ty went 3-for-4 with two RBI. Fisher went 3-for-4 with a triple, two runs and two RBI. Winter was 3-for-3 with a double and scored three times. Bitten went 3-for-3, added a sacrifice fly, drove in two, and pitched the whole game. After the seven-run second, the Angels did not score again.

Grant was 2-for-3 with two RBI. Cook went 2-for-4. Brooks was 1-for-4 with a triple and an RBI. Cole was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Matt, the sub who caught, went 1-for-2 with a walk and scored twice.

As a team, Hatfish went 23-for-34 with 17 runs.

Hatfish played it with 10. Ben and Alfie were late scratches and Creg was out, so there was no DH.

What it means

The fall started with a 1–3 loss to the DBC Padres on Sept. 14. Since then Hatfish has beaten the Battle Unicorns 10–8, Zion Lutheran 18–2 and now the DBC Angels 16–8. That is three straight wins and a 3–1 record.

The cycle is the line people will remember from Monday. The line score is worth a look too. Hatfish gave up seven in one inning, answered with five in the same inning, and took the lead for good the next time up. Rabalais was in both of those innings, and the swing that put Hatfish ahead was his.
