DNP: Winter #5

NUKE = over-the-fence OUT on the play. Logged in the NUKE column. Does not count as a Hit. Does not count as an AB.

By Trent Crimm

RICHARDSON, Texas — The record says 2–1. The box score says the club found its bat. Hatfish Softball beat Zion Lutheran 18–2 on Monday, Sept. 28, at Huffhines Field No. 2, and did it with 29 hits.

The margin is 16 runs. The sheet from the night does not carry an inning-by-inning line, pitching, walks, strikeouts or NUKEs. This report goes only as far as the numbers do.

Hatfish was the home side. Winter #5 was out, per the poll. The fall record now stands at 2–1 after the 1–3 loss to the DBC Padres on Sept. 14 and the 10–8 win over the Battle Unicorns on Sept. 21.

The sheet

Ty went 4-for-4: three singles and a double, three RBI, one run. Cook went 4-for-4 with two RBI and two runs. Alfie was 3-for-3 with three RBI and two runs. Creg was 3-for-3 with two RBI and two runs.

Taylor went 3-for-4: two doubles and a single, two RBI, two runs. Fisher was 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs. Bitten was 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs. Cole was 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run.

The back of the sheet had its share. Grant went 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run. Brooks went 1-for-4, a double, with a run. Ben went 1-for-4 and scored twice.

Every batter on the sheet reached base on a hit and every one of them scored. Eleven players got at-bats and the club finished 29-for-41. Four hitters went 4-for-4 or 3-for-3 and drove in at least two: Ty, Cook, Alfie and Creg. Four more went 3-for-4.

The ledger

The sheet records 16 RBI on 18 runs. It does not say how the other two came in, and this report will not guess.

The box gives Zion Lutheran two runs and no more. There is no pitching line to hand credit to, and none will be handed out here.

What it means

A 2–1 record in the third week of a fall season says little. A 29-hit night in one game says a lot about that game. Twenty-nine hits in 41 at-bats is the kind of line that, in a more suspicious league, would prompt an inquiry; in Men's E Monday Competitive, it prompts a standings update. The next one will say whether it travels.

Hatfish is next on the road: Monday, Oct. 5, 7:00 p.m., at the DBC Angels, Huffhines #2.
